Sharpe Refectory

The Sharpe Refectory project at Brown University offered a great opportunity to improve daily student life. This $4,000,000 interior renovation project encapsulated several phases, approaching individual architectural challenges and addressing them succinctly and effectively. Widening the main entrance allows the comfortable accommodation of additional student capacity. New accessible features offer increased service to all diners, and upgrades to several finishes maintain the facility’s inviting appearance.
L | L + B incorporated a complete re-envisioning of the ceiling lighting system, replacing the existing installation with dynamic spotlighting that bounces off of custom translucent disks situated below. Removal of the previous tiled ceiling in favor of a new acoustically-treated monolithic ceiling plane adds further refinement to the space. Beyond the mere aesthetic improvements, it served as a functional solution to the prevalent sound issues of the densely populated refectory. Life safety upgrades round out the all-encompassing renovation.
