Brown Daily Herald

While the Brown Daily Herald is a respected institution on campus, its physical home was less than admirable. The Herald has been publishing its daily newspaper independent from the University since 1891, though over the years its offices had devolved into an inadequate collection of neglected spaces. L | L + B stripped the building to its elegant core, revealing the columned structure and creating a much more open and modern layout in keeping with the newspaper’s needs. Computer technology, a key component of the newspaper’s program, incorporates unobtrusively into the workstation spaces. The upstairs newsroom received renovations to restore the former grandeur of the paneled library. Exterior upgrades involved reconfiguring the stairs to meet current code, renovating the entry, and adding an exterior ramp to meet ADA requirements.
