Replacing a 3,000 SF building up the street, the new York Public Library is a 25,000 sf new building in the center of historic York Village, Maine. The design mediates between the residential scale of the neighborhood and the businesses of the village by using high quality materials of granite wood and slate and traditional building forms. Included in the project is a 100 car parking area connected to the business district with sidewalks and footbridges and the development of an on site wetland into a landscaped pond and garden.
The interior is highlighted by a working fireplace, cherry wood trim and furnishings and a plan that is open and secure while still providing intimate spaces for reading, browsing, studying and meeting.
