The North Scituate Public Library holds the memories of all the residents of North Scituate who have used it over the years as well as the memories of the villages of Kent, Richmond, Ashland, Saundersville, Ponaganset, Wilbur Hollow, South Scituate, and Rockland villages that were “absorbed” by the creation of the Scituate Reservoir. The chance to expand the building for a public program that is open to the entire ranges of community members, from toddlers to seniors, gives the opportunity for all of the citizens to rediscover and appreciate their shared heritage. The North Scituate Public Library itself, due to its wonderful programs and central location, can really be considered a true community center. The original building, built in 1925, was originally a classical style featuring a symmetrical layout around a central entrance.
The main challenge for the project is to preserve and revive the use of the original building into a vibrant and thriving public library for the 21st century and beyond while retaining its historic charm with an addition that supports it in function, purpose, scale, and design.
