A major dormitory addition of 60 students was made to a significant mansion that formerly housed 20 students. Although the footprint of the addition is smaller, substantially more students are accommodated than in the original house. To break down its scale, the addition is stepped with the site to maintain a low profile, preserving the existing gardens and minimizing impact on the adjacent residential neighborhood. The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects awarded this project its First Design Award.
