Lerner | Ladds + Bartels was approached by Brown University to design both aesthetic and applicative improvements to this University Childcare Center. The new entrance canopies demarcate an interesting and obvious entrance to an otherwise inconspicuous building. The use of bright and vibrant color (classic yellow) reflects the nature of the child development program. Selected shapes are intended to capture and disperse light in ways that would help this canopy glow from below, further highlighting the entrance to main lobby which was otherwise difficult to decipher in the bilaterally symmetrical building. The non-public side entrance would receive an inverted canopy, with the intention of signifying it to the public as a secondary egress.
Inside, we spruced up the main lobby with new casework focused on letting the area serve several functions during the day, such as a decompression zone in the morning and storage for toys, boots, backpacks, and more. Casework details focused on using primary colors, durable surfaces, and soft rounded edges to minimize abuse and injury.
