James Island Fire Station

Work performed by principal R. Drayton Fair, LEED AP, ALA, AIA, while employed at Tappe Associates.

The intent of the James Island Fire station was to create a municipal building that fit perfectly into its residential surrounding. The ultimate result was a building that was not only functional a as working fire station, but that created a “home-like” environment for the fire fighters. Elements such as the garage and form of the building hold roots in a typical suburban home design however the building is transformed from residential to monumental with the play of scale and material choices of brick, stucco, and split faced concrete block. The combination of these opposing elements created a municipal building that was both utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing in its neighborhood setting.
